A great story from the former heavy metal rocker Brian "Head" Welch. Sure helps to eliminate that God only wants people who have it all together and look "pretty"

Friends, Musilms, Reminders, and Lebron

As some of you are aware I serve as a 4th grade Children's Ministry teacher at my church, and as we are getting set to wind down the current 4th grade year, we will have the month of August off and then will start again with the incoming fourth grade class. I have had the privilege to have a Children's Ministry mentor in the person of Mr. K who I assisted the last two years. Mr. K after seven years is considering taking a break for Children's Ministry (a well deserved break!) and today as we celebrated his birthday at the end of class, I reflected back on my first day we met Mr. and Mrs. K.

From day one, they made me and my wife feel at home and it became apparent very quickly, God had placed us with Children's Ministry teachers who had it right - the Bible came first and our duty was to teach the children to the best of our abilities and assist them growing in Christ. After sitting back and watching Mr. K teach the first 3 lessons of the year, my admiration for him grew and I desired to learn everything I could from him to be an effective teacher. My teaching experience and dealing with 4th grade children coming into my first year amounted to zero and I did not quite know what to expect. Over the next two and a half years, Mr. K became a mentor, a brother in Christ, and someone I am proud to call a friend. Mr. K introduced me to the Christmas and Easter choirs (even though I cannot sing!) and got me involved in many things which I will be forever grateful for.

While our teaching styles are different, combined we formed a very effective team. While I am sure there were some days Mr. K left and told his wife "you will never believe what he did with the kids today" or on many occassions wondered "where is this going" I know he came to realize that the Bible and the children are very important to me, and I understand the importance of keeping "the plain thing the main thing and the main thing the plain thing". While our styles may be different, the lesson Mr. K taught me always remained the same. God's Word comes first and in everything we do it must be Christ centered.

For the first time, it really hit me today that Mr. K may indeed take the much deserving break he has earned. If that indeed happens, I am sure I cannot fill his shoes and it will never be "my class" - I will just be trying to continue on Mr. K's class and the standard he set. I truly understand after seven years the need for a break and support Mr. K one hundred percent. But in the years ahead, the door will always be open to come back and lead his class whenever he desires. I know from being on Mr K's team, that while the children he has taught over the years may not have knew it then, I am sure they each will one day reflect back and when asked "who was the Sunday School teacher that had the greatest impact on you" will think of Mr. K and answer with stories of how much they learned and of course they will never forget the end of the year pie in the face event that became a trademark for Mr. K's class.

It is with mixed emotions today I realize I may have only one more class to learn from my mentor. I want to see him go, but I do not want to see him go. I guessed I am blessed that I know if I need him at anytime he will be there and I can always seek his advice.

Mr. K - thank you for everything you have done for my family, for sticking with me and allowing me to grow as a teacher and for the encouragement you have always provided. Children's Ministry will not be the same without you if you decide to take a break, but I hope you know I will be carrying on everything you taught me and everything that you led by example and can only hope to become half the teacher you are.

Missionary Meeting:
After church today we had the pleasant surprise of being invited to a birthday party for a very special boy that my daughter helps with at the church. While celebrating his birthday, we had the pleasure of meeting two missionaries from Indonesia who are here with the Ambassadors of Soccer. It was very interesting learning that their country was primarily Musilm and that they had to come up with a different name other then the Ambassadors of Soccer to be able to function in their own country spreading the Good News. While they have places to worship the majority of the cities and villages are still Muslim. I left amazed at how we take our freedom to worship for granted, and in awe at their desire to travel the world sharing Jesus Christ. Just awesome.....

Reminders:
At the same birthday party for this very special boy, the mother got up and thanked God for him, and then thanked everyone who helped with him and for glorifying God. She wanted to remind us that every act of kindness we do is glorying God and that is why we are here - to glorify God. Next time you hear someone say "what is the point of life" use that opportunity to introduce them to God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit and let them know we are created and are here to glory God...

Lebron:
I think everyone in the world knows Lebron James chose to leave his hometown Cleveland Cavs and went to Miami. I have never met Lebron James and cannot state anything of fact about him. It seems however, he is chasing man made idols and I really do not have a problem with him changing teams - but I did not like how he did it. I believe this plan of Wade, Bosh, and James has been in place for the last three years which is fine, but I do not think LeBron needed to go on live TV and announce he was leaving the city that had embraced him, paid him millions and catered to his every desire. I cannot believe he did not contact the owner of the Cavs to tell him his decision and his "King James" attitude I am sure was not developed at the Cathoilc High School he played at. Lebron has seemed to have forgotten we do not worship false idols and our treasures are not here on earth, but stored in heaven. I pray that Lebron glorifies "the man up above" (his words from his TV special) and uses his talents to further the kingdom rather then forget no matter how much money he has or how many rings he wins, in the end he will stand before God and those things are not going to matter. One last thing that struck me, Lebron said on his TV special that "he wanted to be a good father". HEY LEBRON try being a good husband...oh wait, I forgot YOUR NOT MARRIED!

What Would of You Have Done?

Julio Diaz has a daily routine. Every night, the 31-year-old social worker ends his hour-long subway commute to the Bronx one stop early, just so he can eat at his favorite diner.

But one night last month, as Diaz stepped off the No. 6 train and onto a nearly empty platform, his evening took an unexpected turn.

He was walking toward the stairs when a teenage boy approached and pulled out a knife.

"He wants my money, so I just gave him my wallet and told him, 'Here you go,'" Diaz says.

As the teen began to walk away, Diaz told him, "Hey, wait a minute. You forgot something. If you're going to be robbing people for the rest of the night, you might as well take my coat to keep you warm."

The would-be robber looked at his would-be victim, "like what's going on here?" Diaz says. "He asked me, 'Why are you doing this?'"

Diaz replied: "If you're willing to risk your freedom for a few dollars, then I guess you must really need the money. I mean, all I wanted to do was get dinner and if you really want to join me ... hey, you're more than welcome."

"You know, I just felt maybe he really needs help," Diaz says.

Diaz says he and the teen went into the diner and sat in a booth.

"The manager comes by, the dishwashers come by, the waiters come by to say hi," Diaz says. "The kid was like, 'You know everybody here. Do you own this place?'"

"No, I just eat here a lot," Diaz says he told the teen. "He says, 'But you're even nice to the dishwasher.'"

Diaz replied, "Well, haven't you been taught you should be nice to everybody?"

"Yea, but I didn't think people actually behaved that way," the teen said.

Diaz asked him what he wanted out of life. "He just had almost a sad face," Diaz says.

The teen couldn't answer Diaz — or he didn't want to.

When the bill arrived, Diaz told the teen, "Look, I guess you're going to have to pay for this bill 'cause you have my money and I can't pay for this. So if you give me my wallet back, I'll gladly treat you."

The teen "didn't even think about it" and returned the wallet, Diaz says. "I gave him $20 ... I figure maybe it'll help him. I don't know."

Diaz says he asked for something in return — the teen's knife — "and he gave it to me."

Afterward, when Diaz told his mother what happened, she said, "You're the type of kid that if someone asked you for the time, you gave them your watch."

"I figure, you know, if you treat people right, you can only hope that they treat you right. It's as simple as it gets in this complicated world."

Well it has been awhile...

Well it has been nearly a month since I had a blog post and I will be back blogging on a regular basis soon. The last month has been very busy and things are now getting back to normal.

Miley Cyrus "Can't Be Tamed" Video

Why does it seem like every young girl Disney makes a star out of ends up having nude pictures of them self exposed, decide they need to dress inappropriately, act like they are older than a teenager and just one day say the right things and the next day make you cringe that we let our children watch and follow these "role models" on Disney?

Follow the link below for an article on the latest upcoming Miley Cyrus video that leaves no doubt Miley is no longer Disney but more Brittney Spears and Lady Gaga combined:

Dear Lord...Please Give Me Patience

So, have you ever had one of those "customer service" experiences that just wanted to make you explode? My friends at ATandT had me continually praying for patience recently and in the end the experience just made me aggravated more.

Here we go...So the time has come that my youngest daughter needs a cell phone. No problem, the nice woman at ATandT (our wireless phone carrier) tells us, "No problem!", "Free phone!" and "your bill will only go up $10.00 per month." OK we can live with that...then we indicated we wished we could get Internet service without having home phone service because we are tired of paying for a land line we never use..the nice woman at ATandT then states "No problem! You can cancel your home land line and still get the Internet, but the Internet service will increase by $4.00 per month. Would you like to make that change now?"...."errr no we need to think about it and let people know we will no longer have the home phone number in service". TRUST ME I SHOULD OF SAID YES RIGHT THEN AND THERE...

A few days go by and we decide that we are going to disconnect the home phone service, keep the Internet service, add a cell phone for my daughter and our net savings per month will be $60.00 to $70.00. Time to look up the ATandT Customer Service number and make this switch...

After waiting on hold for a Customer Service Representative for 30 minutes (Dear Lord please give me patience, I know they are busy, but so am I, please keep be calm this will be over soon) I finally get to speak to a nice man (or so I thought).

"Thank you for calling ATandT would you like to sign-up for ATandT U Verse TV?" Again with the U Verse TV..."No thank you, as I have told the people who have knocked on my door three times, sent me an unbelievable amount of emails, snail mail and phone calls...No, I do not want U Verse TV". (The ATandT people knock more then Jehovah Witness!). As I told the nice man, I do not have any plans to switch now, nor in the future. "So how can I help you today?" replied the seemingly nice man. "We have a land line, Internet and cell phones with you and we want to cancel the land line but keep the Internet service and cell phones. Here we go "OK, this process will take 10 to 15 minutes to complete, do you have the time now?"....Dear Lord, help me hang in there 10 to 15 minutes longer..."Sure, I have only been waiting 30 minutes to speak to you so what is another 10 to 15 minutes..."

"Are you sure you do not want to switch to ATandT U Verse?" stated the seemingly nice man..."WHY YES I AM SURE can we please continue on disconnecting the home phone line!" As I watch the clock tick off another 10 minutes as he brings up the computer to process my request. Then he states "OK the Internet service will go up $9.00 per month"..."Excuse me sir, the nice lady we spoke to a few days ago said that the increase would be $4.00...why are you telling me $9.00?" And the smoke and mirrors begin..."Well you will have to lease a new modem which is the additional monthly charge" Clock ticks another 5 minutes..."Why do I need a new modem to keep the same Internet service I currently have?" Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for this person..."Well you have to get a new modem when you get the U Verse Internet service" Please Lord, help me from the desire the reach through the phone and implement an attitude adjustment on this person..."I do not want U Verse TV or U Verse Internet...I just want what we have always had"

The nice man then tells me "OK I see" and another 10 minutes has past..."OK we have the home land line scheduled to be disconnected, you will be without the Internet for a few days while we ship you the new modem and on your next bill there will be a $149.99 charge for switching to U Verse Internet as we are phasing your area to U Verse"...Dear Lord, I have done well up to this point...may need a little help here to stay calm..."So you are not listening to me and now are telling me to keep Internet service with ATandT you want to charge me $149.99, make me get a new modem and increase my Internet cost by $9.00 per month?" He replies "Yes, if you want to keep the Internet that is what it takes."

"OK sir, here's the deal, put everything on hold, do not cancel our land line and give me a case number I can call back on. Leave everything as if I never called." I replied.

Upon getting home from work I begin checking out alternative Internet providers and find out our local cable company offers Internet regardless if you have their cable service. They offer free installation for the cable from the pole to your home, has a rebate on the modem which makes it free and offers a faster service then we currently have for $23.00 per month for 12 months. And to top it off I can everything in place in 1 day...pretty impressive. I get a name and tell them I will call them back after I call ATandT.

As I dread dialing the ATandT Customer Service number I wonder how much more time this is going to take. I am amazed when after one ring a very nice woman named Jessica answers...Thank you Lord! "How can I help you" she asked. Here we go again..."I want to cancel my home line and now Internet service please" Please Lord let this person help me..."Oh" she stated, I understand cancelling the home line, that's the right choice for many people, but why are you cancelling the Internet with us?." So I go through the whole ordeal of the morning and what took place with the man who I spoke with there and that I have now found an alternative Internet provider. "I am sorry" she states" "I have no idea why you were told you had to switch to U Verse Internet and no you do not, and you do not need to pay anything to keep the same Internet service you have. The Internet will increase by $4.00 and I can have your home line cancelled by the 29th"...Thank you Lord! "Also" she stated "I am going to increase you to the next level of Internet services which will give you greater speed and if you give me the OK I can combine your Internet bill and your cell phone bill together and give you a single invoice discount which wipes out most of the $4.00 increase for the Internet only service"... At this point I am thinking to myself "is this the same company? Is it a game being played that now that I was ready to cancel both the home phone and Internet that they are being nice?". Jessica then tells me she has no idea why the person earlier in the day told me I had to switch to U Verse Internet and pay $149 and she has noted who I spoke with, the problems I had and if I had any further problems that everything was now noted and I could feel free to call back...

So I greatly appreciated Jessica's help, and I am hoping everything goes as planned. I still wonder if the ATandT man was either trying to "pull one over on me" and being dishonest or if possibly he really had no idea what he was talking about...All I know is the Lord was with me as I did a remarkable job of staying calm through this incredible amount of wasted time. And no I do not want ATandT U Verse TV, Internet or anything else! I guess I needed to go through this exercise to work on my patience...but I am sure glad it is over...(please be over!)

I Finally Agree With An Atheist..Arrest the Pope...

Atheist campaigner Richard Dawkins wants Pope Benedict XVI to be arrested during his state visit to Britain in September. Dawkins and atheist author Christopher Hitchens have approached human rights lawyers about whether the pontiff can be arrested over his alleged cover-up of child abuse by Catholic priests.

Is it just me or do you think the Pope and the whole Vatican could star in the next "Do you want to get away?" commercial?
Without trying to offend my Catholic friends, when does one say enough is enough? The Pope is a man, just like you and me and "The Best of Men, are Men at Best".

I can honestly state that I never thought I would ever hear myself saying "I agree with an atheist. But in this case I agree something needs to be done with the problems facing the Pope and the Vatican.

I recently in the mail received a "Catholic Blessing Prayer" from an "unknown" person (who must know me if they knew my address) with the prayer being for blaspheme as they must have been offended by something I had posted on this blog. I found it humorous that the "unknown" person felt so strong about their Catholic beliefs that they could not sign their name to a note or on the outside of the envelope. I hope this time the person contacts me so we may discuss each views and come to a better understanding of each beliefs if this posting upsets them.

I do not believe the Catholic church should have immunity for any crimes it commits and any person committing a crime or aiding in the cover up of a crime, or refusing to remove known offenders and report them to the proper authorities should be treated no different than you or I. There are many things I disagree with with the Catholic church which I will refrain from discussing at this time but again, yes all men (and women) are sinners, including the Pope and the Vatican but when is enough going to be enough? Go to www.cnn.com and search "Pope" or "Vatican" and just view the headlines the results produce. If I was Catholic I cannot say I would be very proud right now and for those who say "I am Catholic because I was raised Catholic' that really would not mean a lot to me. Read God's Word, take nothing someone preaches at face value, use your mind, and decide for yourself if what you are being told is correct based on what God has spoken to us through the Bible.

I think we all need to pray that one day there is one true church and all the questions and different viewpoints come together. We need to pray for the victims of past offenses, pray that they will end, and pray that the Bible is our sole source for understanding Scripture and salvation. While Dawkins and Hitchens are seeking judgement here on earth for the Pope, I think it will be an interesting discussion when the real judgement day comes - God's judgement.

You can read the full article regarding Dawkins and Hitchens desire to have the Pope arrested here:

Thank God For Your Thorns

A relative emailed this to me so I thought I would share:

Sandra felt as low as the heels of her shoes when she pulled open the florist shop door, against a November gust of wind. Her life had been as sweet as a spring breeze and then, in the fourth month of her second pregnancy, a "minor" automobile accident stole her joy .

This was Thanksgiving week and the time she should have delivered their infant son. She grieved over their loss.

Troubles had multiplied.

Her husband's company "threatened" to transfer his job to a new location. Her sister had called to say that she could not come for her long awaited holiday visit. What's worse, Sandra 's friend suggested that Sandra 's grief was a God-given path to maturity that would allow her to empathize with others who suffer. "She has no idea what I'm feeling," thought Sandra with a shudder "Thanksgiving? Thankful for what?" she wondered.. "For a careless driver whose truck was hardly scratched when he rear-ended me? For an airbag that saved my life, but took my child's?"

"Good afternoon, can I help you?"

Sandra was startled by the approach of the shop clerk. "I . . . I need an arrangement," stammered Sandra . "For Thanksgiving? I'm convinced that flowers tell stories, " she continued.. "Are you looking for something that conveys 'gratitude' this Thanksgiving?"

"Not exactly!" Sandra blurted out. "In the last five months, everything that could go wrong has gone wrong."

Sandra regretted her outburst, and was surprised when the clerk said, "I have the perfect arrangement for you."

Then the bell on the door rang, and the clerk greeted the new customer....

"Hi, Barbara, let me get your order." She excused herself and walked back to a small workroom, then quickly reappeared, carrying an arrangement of greenery, bows, and what appeared to be long-stemmed thorny roses. Except the ends of the rose stems were neatly s nipped:
there were no flowers.

"Do you want these in a box?" asked the clerk. Sandra watched - was this a joke? Who would want rose stems with no flowers! She waited for laughter, but neither woman laughed..

"Yes, please," Barbara replied with an appreciative smile. "You'd think after three years of getting the special, I wouldn't be so moved by its significance, but I can feel it right here, all over again," she said, as she gently tapped her chest.

Sandra stammered, "Ah, that lady just left with . . . uh . . . she left with no flowers!"

"That's right," said the clerk. "I cut off the flowers. That's the 'Special'. I call it the Thanksgiving Thorns Bouquet. Barbara came into the shop three years ago, feeling much as you do today," explained the clerk. "She thought she had very little to be thankful for. She had just lost her father; the family business was failing; her son had gotten into drugs; and she was facing major surgery. That same year I had lost my husband," continued the clerk. "For the first time in my life, I had to spend the holidays alone. I had no children, no husband, no family nearby, and too much debt to allow any travel."

"So what did you do?" asked Sandra .

"I learned to be thankful for thorns," answered the clerk quietly. "I've always thanked God for the good things in my life and I never questioned Him why those good things happened to me, but when the bad stuff hit, I cried out, 'Why? Why me?!' It took time for me to learn that the dark times are important to our faith! I have always enjoyed the 'flowers' of my life, but it took the thorns to show me the beauty of God's comfort! You know, the Bible says that God comforts us when we're afflicted, and from His consolation we learn to comfort others."

Sandra sucked in her breath, as she thought about what her friend had tried to tell her. "I guess the truth is I don't want comfort. I've lost a baby and I'm angry with God."

Just then someone else walked in the shop.
"Hey, Phil!" the clerk greeted the balding, rotund man.

"My wife sent me in to get our usual Thanksgiving arrangement . . twelve thorny, long-stemmed stems!" laughed Phil as the clerk handed him a tissue wrapped arrangement from the refrigerator.

"Those are for your wife?" asked Sandra incredulously. "Do you mind telling me why she wants a bouquet that looks like that?"

"Four years ago, my wife and I nearly divorced," Phil replied. "After forty years, we were in a real mess, but with the Lord's grace and guidance, we trudged through problem after problem, the Lord rescued our marriage. Jenny here (the clerk) told me she kept a vase of rose stems to remind her of what she had learned from "thorny" times. That was good enough for me. I took home some of those stems. My wife and I decided to label each one for a specific "problem" and give thanks for what that problem taught us."

As Phil paid the clerk, he said to Sandra , "I highly recommend the Special!"

"I don't know if I can be thankful for the thorns in my life" Sandra said to the clerk. "It's all too. fresh."

"Well," the clerk replied carefully, "my experience has shown me that the thorns make the roses more precious. We treasure God's providential care more during trouble than at any other time. Remember that it was a crown of thorns that Jesus wore so we might know His love....Don't resent the thorns."

Tears rolled down Sandra 's cheeks. For the first time since the accident, she loosened her grip on her resentment. "I'll take those twelve long-stemmed thorns, please," she managed to choke out.

"I hoped you would," said the clerk gently. "I'll have them ready in a minute."

"Thank you. What do I owe you?"

"Nothing. Nothing but a promise to allow God to heal your heart...The first year's arrangement is always on me."

The clerk smiled and handed a card to Sandra . "I'll attach this card to your arrangement, but maybe you would like to read it first."

It read: "My God, I have never thanked You for my thorns. I have thanked You a thousand times for my roses, but never once for my thorns. Teach me the glory of the cross I bear; teach me the value of my thorns. Show me that I have climbed closer to You along the path of pain. Show me that, through my tears, the colors of Your rainbow look much more brilliant."

Praise Him for the roses; thank Him for the thorns.

God Bless all of you. Be thankful for all that the Lord does for you.

Letters to God

Letters to God is a story of laughter, love and triumph. Most of all it is a saga of hope-in all circumstances-the kind of good hope that is found in simple, childlike friendship with God. I finished reading the novel Letters to God by Patrick Doughtie and John Perry based on a true story and the movie which opens tomorrow.

If the movie is as half as good as the book was, it will be a success (and I am sure the movie will be as good or better than the book). The book made you laugh, smile, and brought a tear to your eye as you become part of Tyler's life. Tyler is your everyday kid, playing soccer and enjoying his friendship with Sam (Samantha) who happens to be a girl. Tyler states "She's my best "like a guy" friend. An actual friend who happens to be a girl." Then headaches begin and vomiting follows and Tyler's mom knows something is wrong. Just getting over a different tragey, Tyler's family feel like they are at the breaking point, and Tyler's mom and brother begin to wonder how God could let this happened.

Tyler's grandmother (Granna)keeps praying and holding the family together. Tyler's dad used to write letters to God, so Tyler decides he wants to write letters to God
also.

With each letter Tyler writes he becomes closer to God, and he has no idea that the mailman has kept all his letters and how they will be used to touch so many lifes including the mailman's.

Tyler was a courageous, special young boy who touched many people, and his story is a special one. I encourage you to see the movie or read the book.

How to Make a God

This week I asked a friend how his Easter was and he replied "Well I din't make it to church, was over at mom's and then went and worked on the baseball fields all day." He coaches baseball in the summer and as you can probably tell is very passionate about it. It saddened me to hear he did not go to church on Easter. Everytime I think he has began to desire a true relationship with our Lord and Savior, he takes a step back. That being stated, I continue to pray that one day when God knocks he will truly answer.

Our conversation reminded me of Tim Keller's book Counterfeit Gods - The Empty Promises of Money, Sex, and Power, and the Only Hope That Matters.

In his book Tim Keller writes:

What is an idol? It is anything more important to you than God, anything that absorbs your heart and imagination more than God, anything you seek to give you what only God can give.

A counterfeit god is anything so central and essential to your life , should you lose it , your life would hardly be worth living. An idol has such a controlling position in your heart that you can spend most of your passion and energy, your emotional and financial resources, on it without a second thought.

Downpour by James MacDonald

In his book, James Macdonald writes, “Like me, maybe you’ve experienced some parched days in your relationship with God. Maybe you’ve had seasons where time alone with God was empty and dry. You – yes you-can have a fresh downpour of God’s grace and mercy upon your life. The hands that hold this book can feel a fresh surge of energy to labor for our King. The eyes that see these pages can gaze in renewed wonder and awe upon the God who loves you. The heart beating within your chest this moment can pulse with renewed joy given by God in response to the choices you make and the actions you take. Honest! God is not reluctant; He is ready and willing.”

One of the privileges I have at the church I am a member of, is to serve as an usher at the evening service. I enjoy serving God and I enjoy the ability to meet the people attending the service. One of the persons I speak to on a regular basis always asks me “What have you read this week?” and I have began sharing some of my books for her to read. I always get the question “What did you think about this book…or can you recommend a book for a friend about…” A few Sunday’s back she arrived a little early and asked me what I thought of a book and I answered “It really depends on where a person is at in their walk with God on if they will think it is a good book or not.” She thought about it for a moment, and said “You know you are right, I never thought it that way.”

I always find it hard to recommend books, because a book that may have a dramatic impact on one person may or may not be deep enough for another person. Or it may be too deep and the person may not be ready for it. When recommending a book to someone I have been trying to give an overview of the book, the topics and if it was an “easy” or “difficult” read. With that in mind, last week I read Jame’s MacDonald’s book Downpour - He Will Come To Us Like The Rain – God’s Best When you Need Him The Most.

If your walk seems stagnate or you know someone who has drifted away from Christ, or maybe you know someone who indicates they are a believer but really do not feel the Holy Spirit in them or feel they do not have a "real" relationship with God, then this book may be a good recommendation for them.

The book is written as many of Jame’s MacDonald’s other books are – biblically sound and written in a very easy, almost conversational, type writing. Those who read a lot and those who do not will find this book very easy to understand and be able to put into practice many of the topics covered.

The book covers personal revival, true repentance, identifying things we may need help with, and how do we know the Holy Spirit has filled us? One of the interesting aspects of this book is Pictures of Personal Revival From History – a one page recount of major personal revivals in each chapter. At the end of each chapter you will find Activate, Elevate, and Replicate sections to help the reader look deeper inside themselves.

If you are “dry” spiritually “Downpour” may be the book for you. I felt it was time well spent.

James MacDonald is the founding and senior pastor for Harvest Bible Church in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. He is also the Bible teacher on Walk in the Word, heard daily on over 650 radio stations across North America, seeking to “ignite passion in the people of God through the proclamation of truth.” Previous books by Dr. MacDonald include Gripped by the Greatness of God, God Wrote A Book, Lord Change My Attitude (Before It’s Too Late), and I Really Want To Change …So Help Me God.

Hey Kids, It's Not About a Bunny

Hey kids, it's not about a bunny...no Peter Cottontail hopping down the bunny trail...no pound of chocolate in the shape of a bunny...no Easter eggs...that's not what Easter is about. A bunny was not nailed to a cross to die for us. At Easter and at Christmas I am amazed that people who do not believe in Jesus get all excited and celebrate. I asked a friend at Christmas time (who happens to be a Atheist) "If you do not believe in Jesus, what are you celebrating? Why are you buying gifts?". Now that it is Easter, many non-believers rush out to buy an Easter basket for little Tommy and tell them the Easter Bunny is coming!!! I guess this is another example of worshiping an idol (materialism) than God.

I hope they are also telling their children that Easter is the time that Jesus died on the cross providing a way for our sinful nature to be reconciled to God. And that the Holy Spirit is with us today. I hope they tell them that all believers will have eternal life and that Jesus is coming back, I hope they tell them why there is an Easter and I hope they tell them the true reason for Easter.

I hope they open a Bible and read for the first time, or re-read after a very long time the recount of the death of Jesus, what He endured, the promises we have and why we celebrate Easter. Here is some of Scripture I have reflected on with friends today.

“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!”

Galatians 2: 20-21

“And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them triumphing over them by the cross.”

Colossians 2:15

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples off all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Matthew 28: 18-20

As we reflect on the events of today and Resurrection Sunday, I wanted to wish you a joyous weekend. Take time to share the gospel with others and be thankful for the greatest gift we will ever receive.

Getty Concert

Click on the link below to view the full final concert of Keith & Kristyn Getty's "Awaken the Dawn" tour. The Getty's are nominated for a Dove Award and the concert was incredible. Below is an email message they shared:

This past Palm Sunday was the final night of our ten month 'Awaken the Dawn' tour. After beginning in the Waterfront Hall in our home town of Belfast in June, we had the privilege of bringing it to a close at our home church, Parkside Church in Ohio with our pastor and friend Alistair Begg.

Tomorrow we fly back to Northern Ireland to begin a break from the road for six months to write new hymns and to spend Easter with family and friends.

As we prepare for Easter we have been challenged by a recent talk we heard on Mark 5. It's puzzling why after performing several miracles Jesus asks them not to tell others about what He has just done. One insight into this is remembering that after the cross and resurrection He tells them to go into all the world and make disciples - it seems that once they had the full story and not just part of the picture they were ready to tell. The gospel is more than just answers to physical problems but brings the eternal solution to the deep eternal need in all of us.

May each of us know and tell and live this whole story as we sing and celebrate Easter together,

With grace and peace,

Keith & Kristyn

The Warren Brothers - Dear Mr. God Music Video

Watch the music video of Dear Mr. God by the Warren Brothers from the upcoming movie Letters to God being released April 9th:

John Piper to Take Leave to Reexamine Soul

Well-known evangelical preacher John Piper announced Sunday that he will be taking his first-ever break from ministry to reexamine his soul.

The long-time preacher apologized to his congregation for not a specific deed but for the "sins of my own soul," "ongoing character flaws" and stresses that they have caused to others.

"I see several species of pride," Piper told Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis. "They may not rise to the level of disqualifying me for ministry. Nevertheless, while I don't think they do, I grieve over them."

Piper, who is considered one of the most influential preachers among Protestant pastors, made the announcement after preaching about Jesus Christ and the cross he beared. It was the first of four final sermons before his eight-month leave from the church and ministry.

In the 30 years he has been preaching, Piper said he has never let go of his passion for public productivity – ever. That is, until now.

"In this moment (the leave of absence), I'm letting go of all of it," he said.

That means no preaching, no book writing, no blogging, no tweeting, no articles, no papers and no speaking engagements – with a few exceptions that his wife, Noel, agreed to.

"One of the goals of fasting," he noted, "is to determine levels of addiction or, as Paul Tripp of Tim Keller would say, levels of idolatry."

"The reality check is what will happen to John Piper's soul ... and to my marriage ... and to my future ... when there will be no prideful sipping from the poisonous cup of international fame and notoriety," the 64-year-old preacher said. "I need to find that out and I don't know any other way to do it."

"I just want to preach so bad I can hardly stand it," he admitted. "I love what I do."

The break from ministry will also serve as a period for him to work on his marriage to his wife of 41 years.

The couple is "rock solid" in commitment to each other, he stressed, and there is "no whiff of unfaithfulness on either side." However, Piper said the term "rock solid" is not always an emotionally satisfying metaphor.

"The precious garden of my home needs tending," he told his congregation.

"I want to say ... to you, Noel, that I want you to feel precious, precious over the ministry."

Piper's leave has been approved by the elders at Bethlehem Church, which currently has three campuses. The elders have also appointed a group to stay in touch and keep Piper accountable for the leave.

Though future plans are not certain, Piper said he hopes to return after the leave of absence to preach for at least five more years.

"My prayer and my high expectation is that these months will be a launching for a humble, happy, fruitful five years – I believe the best five years of 35 years and the best five married years of 46," he said.

Piper will be preaching three more times, including on Easter Sunday, before his leave

The Movie - Letters to God, a Possibility Pictures Production

The Movie - Letters to God, a Possibility Pictures Production

The Story
A heartfelt tale of inspiration, hope and redemption, Letters to God is the story of what happens when one boy’s walk of faith crosses paths with one man’s search for meaning—the resulting transformational journey touches the lives of everyone around them.

Tyler Doherty (TANNER MAGUIRE) is an extraordinary eight-year-old boy. Surrounded by a loving family and community, and armed with the courage of his faith, he faces his daily battle against cancer with bravery and grace. To Tyler, God is a friend, a teacher and the ultimate pen pal—Tyler’s prayers take the form of letters, which he composes and mails on a daily basis.

The letters find their way into the hands of Brady McDaniels (JEFFREY S.S. JOHNSON), a beleaguered postman standing at a crossroads in his life. At first, he is confused and conflicted over what to do with the letters. Overtime he begins to form a friendship with the Doherty family – getting to know not just Tyler but his tough, tender yet overwhelmed mom (ROBYN LIVELY), stalwart grandmother (MAREE CHEATHAM) and teen brother Ben (MICHAEL CHRISTOPHER BOLTEN) -- who are each trying to stand strong against the doubts that come with the chaotic turn their lives have taken.

Moved by Tyler’s courage, Brady realizes what he must do with the letters, a surprise decision that will transform his heart and uplift his newfound friends and community –in an exhilarating act of testament to the contagious effect of one boy’s unwavering faith against the odds.

Inspired by a true story, Letters to God is an intimate, moving and often funny story about the galvanizing effect one child’s belief can have on his family, friends and community.

Many folks want to serve God,
but only as advisers.

It is easier to preach ten sermons

People are funny; they want the front

The back of the church.

Opportunity may knock once, but temptation
bangs on your front door forever.

Quit griping about your church;
if it was perfect, you couldn't belong.

If the church wants a better pastor,
it only needs to pray for the one it has.

God Himself does not propose to judge

I don't know why some people

it make which one you stay home from?

A lot of church members who are singing
'Standing on the Promises'
are just sitting on the premises.

We were called to be witnesses,

Prayer:

Don't give God instructions -- just report for duty!

Ephesians 6:10-18....Timely...

Today in my daily Bible study I read the following:

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

He Saw The List

I was looking through the books in my library tonight and came across this from Max Lucado's book 3:16 The Numbers of Hope. With Easter being near I thought it was something we could reflect on:

Come with me to the hill of Calvary. Watch as the soldiers shove the Carpenter to the ground and stretch his arms against the beams. One presses a knee against a forearm and a spike against a hand. Jesus turns his face toward the nail just as the soldier lifts the hammer to strike it.

Couldn't Jesus have stopped him? With the flex of the biceps, with a clench of the fist, he could have resisted. Is this not the same hand that stilled the sea? Summoned the dead?

But the fist doesn't clench...and the moment isn't aborted.

The mallet rings and the skin rips and the blood begins to drip, then rush. Then the questions follow. Why? Why didn't Jesus resist?

"Because he loved us," we reply. That is true, wonderfully true, but-forgive me-only partially true. There is more to his reason. He saw something that made him stay. As the soldier pressed his arm, Jesus rolled his head to the side, and with his check resting on the wood, he saw:

A mallet? Yes.
A nail? Yes.
The Soldier's hand? Yes.

But he saw something else. Between his hand and the wood, there was a list. A long list. A list of our mistakes: our lusts and lies and greedy moments and prodigal years. A list of our sins.

The bad decisions from last year. The bad attitudes from last week. There in broad daylight for all of heaven to see, was a list of your mistakes.

He saw the list! He knew the price of those sins was death. He knew the source of those sins was you, and since he couldn't bear the thought of eternity with out you, he chose the nails.

Easter Lillies Can Grow in the Right Soil

We have all heard the saying at Easter when churches are full that "the Easter Lillies have come out" in reference to people who only go to church at Easter. I thought it would be a good time to reflect on the parable of the soils in Matthew 13:3-9:

Behold, the sower went out to sow; and as he sowed, some seeds fell beside the road, and the birds came and devoured them. And others fell upon the rocky places, where they did not have much soil; and immediately they sprang up, because they had no depth of soil. But when the sun had risen, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. And others fell among the thorns, and the thorns came up and choked them out. And others fell on good soil, and yielded a crop, some a hundred fold, some sixty, and some thirty. He who has ears, let him hear.

The soil illustrates the human heart. The soils in Jesus' parable are the same. The difference in the soils are how they have been conditioned. All the soils could receive the seed, if they were properly prepared. It is the same with human hearts. A person's response to the gospel depends primarily on the preparation of his or her heart. A heart not properly prepared will never bear spiritual fruit.

Behold, the sower went out to sow; and as he sowed, some seeds fell beside the road, and the birds came and devoured them. Here our Lord warns that the human heart can be so pounded and beaten down with sin that it becomes completely insensitive to the gospel. This is the heart that knows no repentance, no sorrow over sin, no guilt, and no concern for the things of God. The seed just bounces off the soil and Satan is portrayed as a ravenous bird, hovering over the hard soil, eager to pluck up the seed the moment it lands.

And others fell upon the rocky places, where they did not have much soil; and immediately they sprang up, because they had no depth of soil. But when the sun had risen, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. This kind of heart is enthusiastic but shallow. It responds positively but not with saving faith. There is no thought involved, no counting the cost. It is quick, emotional, euphoric, instant excitement without any understanding of the actual significance of discipleship. That is not genuine faith. When trials or persecution comes, these people dry up and wither away.

And others fell among the thorns, and the thorns came up and choked them out. This represents weedy soil and a heart preoccupied with worldly matters. Do you know people who fit this category? For a while they come to church, identify with the people of God, even show signs of growth. But they never bear spiritual fruit. They are uncommitted and preoccupied with the world's pleasures, money, career, fame, fortune, or the lusts of the flesh. They say they are Christians, but care nothing about a pure life. That is the response of weedy soil. The germinating seed that looks so good will ultimately be overwhelmed by the thorns of worldliness, and eventually the weedy heart will show no evidence that good seed was ever sown. Weedy hearts may be willing to accept Jesus as Savior, but not if it means letting go of the world.

And others fell on good soil, and yielded a crop, some a hundred fold, some sixty, and some thirty. He who has ears, let him hear. This is the good soil. it is a promise to the discouraged disciples that there is good soil in the field. Let them not be shaken by the people's negative response, Jesus wants us to know that there is a huge field cultivated and ready to receive the seed and it will bear abundant fruit. Of the four soils, only one is good. Only one produces fruit. The good soil pictures the believer. The weedy soil and the shallow soils are the pretenders. The soil by the wayside is an absolute rejector. This parable is the message of the gospel. The sprouting of the seed in the shallow soil and the weedy soil simply means that the Word had been received and begun to operate, not that eternal life had been conferred. Fruit is the ultimate test of true salvation. The proof of salvation is not listening to the Word, or having a quick emotional response to the Word, or even cultivating the Word so that it grows in life. The proof of salvation is fruit, for as Christ said, 'ye, shall know them by their fruits' (Matthew 7:16). As sowers, we are called to broadcast the seed of the unadulterated gospel, even if some of it falls on unprepared soil. There will always be wayside soil, shallow soil, and weedy soil, but there will also always be good soil that will be crops thirty-, sixty-, or a hundredfold. That prepared soil needs only to have the right seed thrown in.

As we arrive upon Easter services, take some time to speak with others and invite them to your service or at your service get to know people who you may not have spoken to in the past. They may need their soil prepared and you can help cultivate their transition to the good soil.

Vatican exorcist: Pedophiles tempted by Satan, not possessed

From www.cnn.com:

The Rev. Gabriele Amorth isn't speaking metaphorically when he says that. The 85-year-old priest means people can be tempted and literally possessed by Satan

And as the Vatican's chief exorcist, it's his job to expel the devil when someone is possessed. He's performed more than 70,000 exorcisms in his career, he estimates.

"I have carried out exorcisms on some priests who had been molested by the devil," he said, without going into details.

Read the full article here: http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/europe/03/16/vatican.exorcist.devil/index.html?hpt=T2

Just curious, if you are Catholic did you know the Vatican had a chief exorcist?

Psst...Hey Let's Not Talk About It...

You know the person..."it's private"..."I really don't talk about it"..."If I told someone about it they would find out more about me then I want them to know..."

I think we all know people who on Sunday's (for least an hour or so) can talk about Jesus to people in their church, but as soon as they walk out the door, they put a check mark on the "go to church" spot on their agenda and don't talk (and in some cases even think) about Jesus until Sunday rolls around again.

Jesus told us that the Holy Spirit would come and that we were to spread the Gospel to all ends of the earth. Why do some people have a hard time talking about Jesus? If you cannot talk about God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit do you really believe deep down that God created everything, that He sent His Son to die on a cross for our sin, and that the Holy Spirit lives in you? I understand someone who states "OK I believe there is a God" but does not go to church, read the Bible regularly or truly understand that it is about relationship and not religion could not speak about God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit for lack of knowledge (if you know this person please lead them to a good Bible teaching church).

Our jobs are to share the Good News, the rest is up to God and the person you shared the message with. Josuha 1:9 tells us "Have I not commanded you? Be, strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord, your God will be with you were ever you go".

We need to be strong and share the truth.

Then there is my favorite "I do not want to offend anyone if they go to a different church, so I do not talk about it" or "I don't want them to think I am stupid if they are not a believer" and I could go on and on...

Take this test. Go stand in front of a mirror. Ask yourself if you truly believe. If yes, now ask yourself if the world ended tomorrow, and you see two lines - one going to heaven and one going to hell, and then you see your mom, dad, best friend, daughter, son, whoever is close to you, stuck in the line going to hell how are you going to feel? What are you going to say when they shout "Why didn't you tell me?"

The Bible tells us to share the Good News, not to keep it private. Tell someone today won't you?

Reminder That I Am Getting Old...

Yesterday we held a "Family Fun Event" for our 4th grade Children's Ministry classes at our church and I spent 2 hours playing basketball, dodgeball, motion maddness and other games with 50 kids and thier parents. During the event we talked about Josuha 1:9 and the theme of the day was "Be Strong". The "Be Strong" theme was based on the children needing to be strong and share their faith.

The "Be Strong" theme for me today is for my knees...they are both reminding me that I am no longer a "20 something" and when you are generaly inactive for a long period of time over the winter that they do not just bounce back as needed to chase around kids on a Sunday afternoon...

Dear Mr. God

If you have not heard the song "Dear Mr. God" by the Warren Brothers I highly suggest you download from Itunes or your favorite MP3 spot. The song is from the upcoming movie "Letters to God". Great song!

Multi-Site Churches and Video

Some churches today with multi-sites are utilizing video to show a sermon from a single pastor. This issue seems to have many people for this and many people against it. Most of the time, multi-site churches have a well known pastor and many people feel that by showing his sermon by video at additional site locations it brings more people to Christ.

I recently read an article this week where the video viewing will soon be replaced with a halogram of the pastor at the pulpit and it is suppose to be so real you cannot tell it is not the real person. My opinion is I like have a real pastor at the pulpit regardless if it is the well known pastor, or a different local pastor of the church. What are your thoughts?

Some people have the position using video to provide the sermon at multi-locations is creating a celeberty of the pastor. Others state "how do I invite a friend to church and tell them we are going to be watching a video?"

I am all for growing the church but if we are going to watch a video of a well know pastor, we can do that online and fellowship at another church that has a pastor in the pulpt. I believe technology has a place in the church, but do not think this is it.

The Catholic and Evangelical Viewpoint Debate #6

Today we will review the final topic we are addressing from the book Letters Between a Catholic and an Evangelical.

Final Salvation

Fr. John: What does it take to go to heaven? Catholics believe:

Heaven is not so much a place, but the consummation of our betrothal to Christ. When we die, we will be judged on our love (CCC1022). Our actions in this life-good deeds and sacraments-show God that we want to marry Him, i.e. be with Him forever in heaven. Hell manifests God's love and mercy. The damned choose hell, rejecting heaven and their relationship to God. One doesn't go to heaven by default. Wasting talents-the grace God offers us-or not responding to the needs of others, risks eternal damnation. God is all-holy; nothing unholy can enter His presence; so, complete holiness is needed to enter heaven; thus, we must be purged of any remaining unholiness, or choose hell. This purification process is called purgatory. After having believed and been baptized, we are still free to sin and abandon God's favor, like the prodigal son. If we do sin, God gives us the sacrament of confession.

Pastor Jim: As evangelical Christians, we confess our sins directly to God. The Catholic Church, on the other hand, teaches that after baptism, Catholics must confess to a priest every serious sin they commit. Why is this necessary? Would you explain what Rome means when it says that Catholics receive eternal life "as a reward...for their good works and merits"? When New York Times asked cardinal John O'Connor of New York whether he knew if he were going to heaven, he answered:

Church teaching is that I do not know, at any given moment, what my eternal future will be. I can hope , pray, do my very best-but I still do not know. Pope John Paul II doesn't know absolutely that he will go to heaven, nor does Mother Teresa of Calcutta..."

Why cannot even model Catholics know whether or not they will make it to heaven? Having the assurance from God's Word that we are forgiven, at peace with God, and will spend eternity with Him in heaven is something we cherish as evangelical Christians. I heard on the radio last week that the Vatican announced that it will be making Josemaria Escriva, a founder of Opus Dei, a saint. I understand this means they think he is in heaven. How do they know this?

My thoughts: As we draw to a close on topics from this book, I encourage you to read the entire book as both sides present their cases very well. I do not believe there is a purgatory and do believe in John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. I think how the Pharisees were viewed indicates God wants relationships rather then religion. I hope this series of blog posts bring you closer to God.

The Catholic and Evangelical Viewpoint Debate #5

Mary, Angels, and Saints

Pastor Jim: The evangelical position is fairly simple as compared to that of Roman Catholicism. Here is a brief summary as I see it.

Mary was a godly Jewish woman who yielded her life to God's will (Luke 1:38). We consider her blessed, for God chose her to bear the Christ-child (Luke 1:48). Angels are messengers of God sent forth to execute His purposes (Hebrews 1:14). Saints are God's people. The word saints conveys the concept of separation from evil, hence holy and consecrated to God. Scripture uses the term to designate all true believers, not a class of exceptional individuals. See, for example, 1 Corinthians 1:2

Evangelic Christians, for example, do not venerate Mary, angels or saints. We do not pray to them or consider them advocates or mediators between God and us.

My thoughts: Fr. John's response to the above was made in a number of letters in the book and to not take part of different responses it is difficult to post his responses. Fr. John's responses however referenced the Catholic apocryphal books (the additional books in the Catholic Bible) which Evangelicals do not consider part of the sacred Scriptures.

My Thoughts: I believe in Mary, Angels and Saints, but believe all true believers are saints, and that we pray directly to God and only Jesus has interceded for us.

The Catholic and Evangelical Viewpoint Debate #4

Today from the book Letters Between a Catholic and an Evangelical - From Debate to Dialogue on the Issues That Separate Us we will take a a look at the Lord's Supper.

Transubstantiation

Pastor Jim: You say the bread and wine change into Christ's body and blood. The bread and wine, however, look suspiciously similar - identical, in fact-before and after the consecration. Your church favors the theory of transubstantiation to explain the alleged change. I would like to know how you understand this theory and whether you think it makes good sense.

Fr. John: Exactly, how bread and wine becomes Christ body and blood without changing its appearance is a mystery. Yet what happens when we eat? When you consume an apple, its flesh becomes yours. The atoms don't change, yet somehow your body assumes dominion over those atoms and molecules, making them its own. Somehow Christ's body takes dominion over bread and wine, making them its own.

Pastor Jim: The theory of transubstantiation says that at Mass the substance , the inner essence, of the bread and wine change, while their accidents, their outward appearances, remain the same. Yet when Jesus turned water into wine, the disciples tasted it for themselves (John 2:1-11. When He raised Lazarus from the dead, they saw it with their eyes (John 11:1-44). When God the Father spoke to Jesus from heaven, they heard it with their ears (John 12:28-32). When Jesus appeared to Thomas after the resurrection, He invited Thomas to touch the wounds left by the spikes and spear (John 20:26-28). What precedence is there for a "miracle", such as the Catholic Eucharist, that cannot be perceived by any of the senses?

Fr. John: Our Lord chastised Thomas for demanding to put his fingers and hand in our Lord's nail-prints and wounded side: "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe" (John 20:29. There have also been many accounts of miraculous changes of consecrated bread and wine into flesh and blood. One such miracle is over 1200 years old.

My take: I believe the bread and wine are symbols and that is what Jesus was indicating. I also believe that anyone who has come to faith and believes in Jesus and all He did for us can partake in the Lord's Supper. I also believe the Lord's Supper is one of the two (not seven) sacraments that Jesus commands to us in the Bible. What are your thoughts?

The Catholic and Evangelical Viewpoint Debate #3

Today we continue looking at the discussions of Father John R. Waiss and Pastor James McCarthy from the book Letters Between A Catholic and an Evangelical - From Debate to Dialouge on the Issues That Seperate Us and today will look at Infant Baptism:

Catholics (as well as some other denominations) believe in infant baptism. Evangelicals do not, with the belief a person needs to be old enough to make there own choice to follow Jesus and make there own decision to be baptized.

When I am invited to an infant baptism and here "Joey" is being baptized today, I think to myself they should really be saying "Joey's parents" are electing to make the decision "Joey" is being baptized. Also, I have attended Cathoilic Confirmation services for second grade children and would like to pose the question if any of the second graders truly understood what they were doing?

Obviously, I am all for families bringing up their children in faith, but believe the children should not particpate in The Lord's Supper or Baptism until they are old enough to make there own decision on thier faith. What do you think?

Walk Worthy Men's Conference

On Saturday I attended the Moody Bible Institute's "Walk Worthy" Conference for men. What an amazing feeling to worship with 1,600 men. The speakers were very good, and if you have never heard 1,600 men worship in song before, all I can say is it is very amazing!

Moody Bible Institute's President Dr. Paul Nyquist open things up with a challenge of "Drawing the Line Where God Draws the Line" - be a man of integerty. Tiger Woods, Bernie Maadoff, and John Edwards were examples of how some can give a false sense that they are men of integerty. 1 Thessalonians 2 and Daniel were covered.

Christopher Yuan gave his testimony on how after a life of homosexuality, drugs, and prision God called him and he answered.

Dr. Crawford Lorritts spoke on Romans 8 raising the question "What Do We Have To Be Afraid Of?"

Dr. Charles Dryer presented "Human effort is futile, Life is predictable, and Death is certain.

Dr. James Macdonald for me was the highlight of the day presenting on James 1 and "Trials". Pastor Macdonald has a wonderful gift for preaching!

The Catholic and Evangelical Viewpoint Debate #2

The second topic for discussion is Teaching and Ruling Authority:

Father John: How do we know that a particular tradition is of the Holy Spirit and how do Popes today still declare dogmas? Our answer is magisterial or teaching authority.

Catholics believe Christ instituted teaching authority to serve the Word, safeguarding it with authoritive interpretation. Jesus replaced Jewish elders and priests with apostles, gracing them with His own authority. These apostles communicated their teaching authority to their successors, the bishops. Everyone ought to read scripture, yet bishops receive the grace and responsibility to interpret and teach God's Word with authority, and resolve disputes. Acting together, the bishops can infallibly interpret Scripture; as Peter's successor, The Pope processes this gift in a special way, confirming his brother bishops in faith.

Pastor Jim:
Succession: You say that the bishops of your church are the successors of the twelve apostles. What is the biblical basis for this belief?

Teaching Authority: In the Bible I find everyday Christians studying and interpreting God's Word. You say, however, that although anyone can read the Bible, only the bishops of your church have the right to interpret and to teach it with authority. I don't see such claims in the Scriptures. Nor do I find a council of men called bishops claiming the exclusive right to interpret the Scriptures for everyone else.

The Papacy: I was surprised how little you said in your letter concerning the ruling authority of the Pope. Rome makes such grandiose claims in this area. The bishops of the First Vatican Council (1870) stated:
...The Roman pontiff is the successor of the blessed Peter, the prince of the apostles, true vicar of Christ, head of the whole church and father and teacher of all Christian people. To him, in blessed Peter, full power has been given by our Lord Jesus Christ to tend, rule, and govern the universal church.

One would think that if such claims were part of the original teachings of Christ and His apostles we would find them throughout the New Testament. Yet nowhere do we read of a "Roman Pontiff" Can you explain the omission?

The Title of Pope: Jesus said "Call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven" (Matthew 23:9. I am interested in knowing how you can address a man as a Pope, meaning "father" and how you yourself accept the title of Father as a Catholic Priest.
