Sidewalk Prophets: These Are The Words I Would Say

I really like the group Sidewalk Prophets, and when I start to get down this song lifts me up:

These Are The Words I Would Say

Three in the morning, and I’m still awake
So I picked up a pen and a page
And I started writing just what I’d say
If we were face to face

I’d tell you just what you mean to me
Tell you these simple truths

CHORUS
Be strong in the Lord
And never give up hope
You’re gonna do great things
I already know
God’s got His hand on You
So don’t live life in fear
Forgive and forget
But don’t forget why you’re here
Take your time and pray
These are the words I would say

Last time we spoke you said you were hurting
And I felt your pain in my heart
I want to tell you that I keep on praying
That love will find you where you are

I know cause I’ve already been there
So please hear these simple truths

CHORUS

Say… from one simple life to another
I will say… come find peace in the Father

Be strong in the Lord
And never give up hope
You’re gonna do great things
I already know
God’s got His hand on You
So don’t live life in fear
Forgive and forget
But don’t forget why you’re here

Take your time and pray
And thank God for each day
His love will find a way
These are the words I would say

From Game Plan for Life

To Save A Life Impressive Opening Weekend

Below is the press release that was posted on Facebook:

Teen Indie Film, TO SAVE A LIFE, Debuts With Impressive Numbers on Opening Weekend

Teens embrace Samuel Goldwyn Films’ release that encourages and inspires, but now has literally saved lives

Social media has kicked off a movement of 90,000 Facebook fans actively building a community of support

OCEANSIDE, Calif. January 26, 2010 - How can a little indie film with no major actors, no real TV advertising, and little attention from the mainstream press catch the attention of 215,000 teenagers who came out opening weekend?

How can it also have the #1 fan rating today on Fandango.com and Flixter.com?

IndieWire.com says “’Life’ Debuts Strong” and “debuted on an aggressive 441 screens and managed to break the overall top 15. The film - about ‘an all-star athlete must change his life - and sacrifice his dreams to save the lives of others’ - grossed an impressive $1,499,400.” (Final numbers in today give the weekend gross for To Save A Life at $1,513,955)

In comparison, To Save A Life was neck and neck with teen horror flick Daybreakers, however To Save A Life was on less than a third of the number of screens. A similar story occurred with Youth In Revolt, which was on 300 more screens, yet To Save A Life grossed nearly $700,000 more.

The LA Times calls the film an “absorbing redemption story” that “is a deftly acted, generally absorbing cautionary tale with wider allure than its faith-based label may imply.”

The Miami Herald reports, “It features good acting, excellent production values and even a solidly eclectic musical score that ranges from rap to alternative.”

Big Hollywood.com, on the making of the film, states, “To Save a Life is perhaps even more a miracle than the average feature film. Not only did it beat the odds, it did so with its soul still firmly attached.” In contrast to more typical teen fair, such as Youth In Revolt and Daybreakers, it begs to ask the question – are teens looking for more?

“I was thinking as I was approached about this film, why aren’t we creating films that can actually make a positive change in the life of teens, movies that don’t just entertain, but also make an impact in the lives of the viewers?” said Brian Baugh, director of To Save A Life. Exit polls from teens after having seen the film show they want be challenged. And, they feel typical Hollywood films aren’t inspiring them to make their schools a better place.

Not only do box office numbers speak loudly, but the social media sites prove this point. The movie’s official Facebook page jumped over 30,000 users in the last five days – with over 90,000 active users. This number, compared to Youth In Revolt’s 42,000 fans, and the Book of Eli’s 44,000 fans, is compelling. Now, local splinter groups are breaking off, creating To Save A Life groups for their own communities.

Teens are coming together on the Facebook site, talking about their lives, their struggles, and inspiring each other to reach out to the hurting and lonely in their communities.

The proof comes from what teens are saying about the movie themselves:

Nicole- This movie saved my life, last night i attempted suicide but didnt succeed and my confirmation sponsor asked if i wanted to go see it today and as much as i didnt want to i did, and it made me think so much. I have been where jake was on top of everything and no matter what was happening in your life i always had a smile on my face but i have also been in jonny's position too, i used to cut, people just dont no peoples breaking points and i wish people could just be who they want to be without being judged or doubted on your abilities. i was, and now i realize if you trust in the lord and just do the right thing, you will be just fine.

Mark - IN 6th grade i felt alone. i didnt feel like anyone liked me. today, i still feel like some people are just acting nice to me. i dont know what to do. i feel alone a lot, and i dont know what to do. Please help me. The movie was great and got me thinking that other people are just like me. I still feel alone, please help me.

Missy - I cried when I saw the movie, because I want real life to be like that. I never had anyone to turn to when I was depressed, and I still don't. I don't cut myself and I don't try to hurt anymore, I've made a few friends but none of them have seen me hurt. I hide it all in a mask of shame, but I'm going to take off the mask, finally I'm gonna start and I'm gonna help other people, I'm gonna help myself too. No longer will I just be [Missy], I'm going to be known to save a life. Because of this movie. You inspired me.

Travis – I saw the movie yesterday and all i can say is wow it has really touched my life and im not gona sit back and watch anymore im goin out and try to make a difference

Dale - When I was in junior high, I was bullied to the point of suicidal thoughts. God is who stopped me from following through. I had previously just pushed the memories behind me and acted like nothing ever happened, but now I want to do something. I want to make sure no one else feels the way I once did. This movie changed the way I look at life. Save a Life!

Mel - I just got home from watching "To Save A Life" and immediately I came on the computer to Google information. I haven't even taken my jacket off yet. I was so touched by this movie its indescribable; I cried all the way home. I want to make a difference in someone's life. I notice things from the movie that happen around me in school, but it never hit me till now. This movie made me sad, emotional, but most importantly it made me realize that I have the opportunity to help someone. I'm a college student and I cant wait for classes to start Monday cause I already know what I'm going to do. Save a Life

Sara - The To Save A Life Story means a lot to me, because I was the one that needed saving last year. If people could only understand how far one small act of kindness could go, the world would be a better place. I love that this movie is bringing real-life issues that people rarely talk about to light and showing teens how to deal with them. You never know who around you feels he is the outcast - treat others as you would want to be treated. Save a life. This movie is going to change our teenage population for the better.

To Save A Life was created by New Song Pictures and Outreach Films, and is distributed through Samuel Goldwyn Films. After opening on 441 screens this weekend, the film will continue to open in new markets in the coming weeks.

Teen Scene: Getting Smarter Day by Day

When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. 1 Corinthians 13:11

CHOICE: Getting Smarter Day by Day

The maturity of a Christian lasts a lifetime. When we cease to grow we become stagnate or drift away from what we believe. You must be active in God's Word on a regular basis.

Teen Scene: Choosing to Talk Things Over with God

CHOICES: Choosing to Talk Things Over with God

If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave on the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.
James 1:5-8

Have a big decision or important choice to make?

THINK ABOUT IT:

If so then pray about it. Take time to talk to God and he will not lead you astray. Worried about something? Ask God to comfort you. Trouble with a relationship? Ask God to sort it out.

As you pray more, you'll discover that God is always near and that He is always ready to hear from you. When you have questions you can't answer, prayer can help you answer them.

To Save A Life Movie - In Theaters Today!

To Save A Life is now in theaters across the United States today. Thanks to being able to attend an advanced screening of the movie, you can search my blog for my review. I encourage anyone with teenagers to take them to see this movie. Definite buy when the DVD is released!

TEEN SCENE:Choosing to Persevere

Thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
1 Corinthians 15:57-58

CHOICES: Choosing to Persevere

Life is not a sprint; it's a marathon that calls for preparation, determination, and lots of perseverance. Are you one of those people who doesn't give up easily, or are you quick to bail when things get tough?

THINK ABOUT IT:

Jesus finished what He began and so should you. Do you want to build a closer relationship with God? Then don't give up. And if you are facing a difficult situation, remember this: whatever your problem, God can handle it. Your job is to keep persevering until He does.

Take Out The Trash

Yesterday, as I was leaving for work, I noticed the kitchen trash needed to be taken out. Being that it was also the day for trash pickup, I thought:

"No sense and missing the trash men and letting the trash sit in the outside trash can for a week."

So as I was taking the trash to the curb the following thought came to me:

Trash is just like sin. We all have it, and the longer we have it the more it stinks...we need to get rid of sin as soon as possible. A lot of trash and sin can pile up and cause you problems if you do not deal with it.

Game Plan for Life

One of the books I am currently reading is the New York Times Best Seller Game Plan for Life "Your Personal Playbook for Success" by Joe Gibbs with Jerry B. Jenkins published by Tyndale House Publishers, Inc.

As you are probably aware Joe Gibbs is a three time Super Bowl Champion and a three time NASCAR Champion. While this book is written by Joe, he called on the following experts to discuss different topics in the book:

Can I Believe In The Bible? - Josh McDowell

Who is God? - Ken Boa

How Did Life Begin? -John Lennox (one of my favorites!)

How Do I Deal With Sin? - Ravi Zacharias

How Do I Get On God's Winning Team? - Charles Colson

What Does God Say About Marriage and Sex? - Don Meredith

How Do I Master My Money? - Ron Blue

How Do I Build A Successful Life and Career? - Os Guinness

How Do I Achieve True Health? - Walt Larimore, M.D.

How Do I Get The Most Out Of Life? - Tony Evans

TEEN SCENE: The Choice to Get Involved in a Church

For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's feild, God's building.
1 Corinthians 3:9

TEEN SCENE:

A great way to get to know God is by involving yourself in His church. Do you attend church regulary or are you part of your Church Youth Group? Are you an active participator or are you just taking up space?

Don't just go to church out of habit. Go to church out of a sincere desire to know and worship God.

THINK ABOUT IT:

Make church a celebration, not an obligation: Your attitude towards church is important, in part, because it is contagious....so celebrate accordingly!

I'M MAD AT GOD!

"I'M MAD AT GOD!"

Have you ever said that or heard someone say that? Does it sometimes seem like we go through things and do not know why? Someone treats us wrong and what do we want to do? Get even? Make them pay? Treat them the way they are treating us or do to them what they did to us? Have you thought "I'm mad at God because I am going through this?"

If you are honest, I think we have all "been there and done that." It is sometimes hard to remember what the Bible tells us. Next time you want to retaliate against someone read Romans 12: 17-19:

Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord.

It will be hard to not want to fight back, to say or do nasty things to hurt the people who have hurt you. But just remember "do not repay evil with evil". It is easy to tear someone down - anyone can do it. Building someone up may be hard, but it is the better choice. You have the ability to make a difference - you need to choose if it will be a positive difference or a negative difference. Take a bad situation and use it to make a positive difference! Just remember, God does not keep us from problems and suffering, but He does help us get through them. Think you have problems? Spend some time reading the book of Job in the Old Testament!

Movie Turns Into a Growing Movement to Reach Hurting Teens

From www.prnewswrire.com

TO SAVE A LIFE, AN INDEPENDENT FILM, STARTS NATION-WIDE GRASSROOTS EFFORT TO ENCOURAGE AND INSPIRE YOUTH TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
OCEANSIDE, Calif., Jan. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- In impressive local movements across the country, individuals and organizations that work with teens are tirelessly launching grassroots efforts to bring the film TO SAVE A LIFE to their local communities. In many cities, the efforts are led by teens themselves.

Inspired by the film's campaign, these people realize that a film cannot change the world. But the people who see it can change the lives of those around them. In the film, the lead character goes through a series of personal setbacks and a tragedy when a childhood friend ends his own life. Jake Taylor (played by Randy Wayne) begins to ask himself what he could have done to prevent it.

Simply by word of mouth, active street teams and local campaigns, TO SAVE A LIFE has been gaining over 2,000 fans a day on Facebook (now with over 53,000 members) and has received emails from over 5,000 people who have requested to be local "Tower Crew" street team representatives. Original screenings of the film to over 20,000 youth workers, teens, parents, teacher and coaches aided in building interest, as well as a loyal, solid fan base.

Over 200 "Lifeline Squads" have pledged to pre-sell a minimum of 1,000 tickets to the film for opening weekend. 2,500 youth groups across the country have planned to take their students and friends to theaters to view TO SAVE A LIFE.

While the creators hoped the film would be a great tool to inspire viewers to reach out to hurting teens, the massive amount of public support has shown the film has struck a chord with people all across the country – especially teens and those who care about them.

"We have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support for the film," states Jim Britts, screenwriter of TO SAVE A LIFE. "Hundreds of these groups are banding together to help hurting teens, and truly start a movement of hope. We are encouraged to see the film's powerful message really will help save lives."

In Burleson, TX, a group has organized a "red carpet" opening with cast and crew from the film. Before and after the movie, attendees will be able to attend a free party celebrating the film, and reaching out to teens in the community. To make sure no teens get left out, the group is gathering counselors to attend the event to speak with teens in crisis. Over 500 local volunteers including parents, youth workers, educators and city leaders have committed to helping this event reach as many teens as possible. Five screenings of the film there have already sold out.

In Ohio, a group is raising money to buy out complete showtimes and passing out the tickets to people they think might need to see the film. Then they are going to have a staffed "listening room" set up for anyone who might need to talk about a problem or get help after seeing the film.

A citizen bought 1,000 tickets to a theater in Kansas, so the first 1,000 teens to come to the theater opening night can get in for free. This will be followed up by seven weeks of outreach to hurting teens in the local community.

People across the country are volunteering to sponsor "scholarships" to buy tickets for kids anywhere in the country who cannot afford tickets.

Teen Scene: Saying No to Immorality

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God - this is your spiritual act of worship. Romans 12:1

CHOICES: Saying No To Immorality

The decision to have sex before you're married - or the decision to abstain from it -is a choice that will most certainly impact the rest of your life. That decision will play an important role in the way you see yourself, and it will play an important role in the way you view relationships with the members of the opposite sex. And of course, there is always that chance your decision to have sex will end in you having that "unexpected surprise."

THINK ABOUT IT:

Let's face it: there is a lot riding on the decision to abstain from sex. And because it is an important decision, you should think about it - and pray about it - before you make a decision that might just change the direction of your whole life.

Being known as the "easy guy" or "easy girl" and surrounding yourself with so called "friends" who use sex as a way to become accepted only will lead you down the wrong path. A true friend will never ask you to do something that you shouldn't.

Devo2Go: Ephesians 1:3-14

We recently completed reading through a One Year New Testament and now are using the 36 day interactive Devo2Go devotional material. Devo2Go is in the movie To Save A Life (which opens in theaters this Friday!)and uses MP3 files which can be downloaded to your computer or Ipod and has a daily passage reading that you follow along with in the Bible and asks some very good thought and discussion questions. For a free sample of Devo2Go you can visit www.devo2go.com and check it out.

Last night we discussed Ephesians 1:3-14 and discussed these really good questions. Read Ephesians 1:3-14 and think about these questions or action items:

1. Write down everything Jesus has to say about you according to this passage.

2. Look at the list you wrote. Imagine God sitting across the table saying these things to you. How do you think you would respond?

3. Before reading the passage, how did you believe God viewed you? In what ways does this scripture affect your view of yourself?

4. How can seeing the "big picture" from God's perspective change your day-to-day life?

5. Go back to the list you wrote for the first question. Choose one statement from the list and write a few sentences thanking God for seeing you this way.

We are currently on day 3 of Devo2Go and like what we have heard so far - check it out!

Gospel of John: 7 Miracles to Think About

Have you every taken the time to think about the meaning of the miracles Jesus did? Here are a few and the meaning as listed in the John MacArthur Study Bible in the Gospel of John:

Turns water into wine (John 2:1-12) Jesus is the Source of Life
Heals a nobleman's son (John 4:46-54) Jesus is Master over distance.
Heals a lame man at the pool of Bethesda (John 5:1-17) Jesus is Master over time.
Feeds 5,000 (John 6:1-14) Jesus is the Bread of Life
Walks on water, stills a storm (John 6:15-21) Jesus is Master over nature.
Heals a blind man from birth (John 9:1-41) Jesus is the Light of the world.
Raises Lazarus from the dead (John 11:17-45) Jesus has Power over death.

Teen Scene: Meet With God Every Morning

CHOICES

Meet with God Every Morning

The Sovereign Lord has given me an instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being taught. The Sovereign Lord has opened my ears and I have not been rebellious; I have not drawn back. Isaiah 50:4-5

THINK ABOUT IT

Want to get to know God better? Then schedule a meeting with Him every day. When you begin each day with your head bowed and your heart lifted, you are reminded of God's love. God says that if you will seek, you will find. So seek God, and He will reveal His will and His way.

Teen Scene

Hey gang, starting today Teen Scene will be posted in the main body of the blog everyday. This change just allows for more flexibility of what can be posted. So here we go...

CHOICES

The Choice to Walk in the Light

I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. John 8:12

THINK ABOUT IT:

God's Holy Word tells us that Jesus is "the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6). Without Christ we cannot have salvation. And without Christ, we can never know the ultimate truth: God's truth. Do you seek to walk with God? Do you seek to feel His presence and peace? Then you must walk in the truth; you must walk in the light; you must walk with the Savior.

Nobody can find Him for you. God is searching for you; it's up to you - and you alone - to open your heart to Him.

QUICK QUOTE:

Jesus differs from all other teachers; they reach the ear, but he instructs the heart; they deal with the outward letter, but he imparts an inward taste for the truth.

The Ten Favorite Myths

On Monday we will be addressing the Ten Favorite Myths as noted in the John MacArthur Bible Commentary. We will look at the myth and reference what the Bible states. The Ten Favorite Myths are:

Focus On The Family Super Bowl Ad

FOX Sports is reporting that Tim Tebow is taking his star power to sport's biggest stage.

The former Florida quarterback and his mother will appear in a 30-second commercial during the Super Bowl next month. The Christian group Focus on the Family says the Tebows will share a personal story centering on the theme "Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life."

The group isn't releasing details, but the commercial is likely to be an anti-abortion message chronicling Pam Tebow's 1987 pregnancy. After getting sick during a mission trip to the Philippines, she ignored a recommendation by doctors to abort her fifth child and gave birth to Tim.

Saturday Teen Scene: Choosing to Be Yourself

When you feel better about yourself, you make better choices. But sometimes, it's hard to feel good about yourself, especially when you live in a society that keeps sending out the message that you've got to be perfect.

Are you your own worst critic? And in response to that criticism, are you constantly trying to transform yourself into a person who meets society's expectations, but not God's expectations? If so, it's time to become a little more understanding of the person you see whenever you look into the mirror.

Millions of words have been written about various ways to improve self-esteem. Yet, maintaining a healthy self-image is, to a surprising extent, a matter of doing three things: 1. Seek and obey God 2. Think healthy thoughts 3. Finding things to do to please God and yourself. When you concentrate on these things, your self-image will tend to take care of itself.

When you learn to accept yourself, imperfections and all, you'll make better choices.

Movie Review: To Save A Life

High School Kids. Parties. Drinking. Drugs. Sex. Dysfunctional Families. Suicide. This is not your typical Christian movie. And that is actually why this movie hits home with the teenagers of today.

My wife and I, along with our two daughters had the privilege of attending an advanced screening of the To Save A Life movie last night. The movie will be released in theaters on January 22nd. Both my teenage daughter and I had read the book To Save A Life and both wondered if the movie could live up to the book. Let me just say we were not disappointed (outside of the fact the movie did not include lunch at Cosco, those who have read the book understand what we are referring to…and be honest you have been there and done that…) and the movie was very well done and comes highly recommended.

The actors in the movie (many only teenagers) did an excellent job and exceeded our expectations. I have to admit, when I heard To Save A Life was a Christian movie aimed at teenagers, I wondered if they could make a movie that both Christians and non-Christians could related to, enjoy, and get something out of it. The answer is an astounding yes, yes, and yes!

The movie is centered on Jake and Roger, now High School Seniors who when growing up together where best friends. As Jake grows and becomes a star athlete, he meets the popular girl and becomes part of the “in” crowd during his freshman year of High School, and he no longer hangs with Roger and forgets that Roger evens exists. When no one hears Roger’s cry for help, he takes a gun to school and commits suicide.

Roger’s death impacts Jake, and Jake begins to wonder what life is really all about. Jake thought he was living the life – he had a scholarship to the college of his dreams (Louisville), his girlfriend was the girl all the guys wanted, he attended every party and everyone knew who he was. He was Mr. Popularity.

After Jake returns to the basketball court after Roger’s death and sinks the winning basket, a Youth Pastor (Chris) introduces himself to Jake and gives him his card. During a celebration party, Jake gets drunk, he and his girlfriend (Amy) go too far, and after the police breakup the party, Jake finds that Amy has taken his truck, and he has no way home. Remembering he still had the card the Youth Pastor gave him; Jake calls Chris and tells him he needs a ride home. Jake tells Chris, “I’m not really religious” and is surprised to hear the Youth Pastor say “Good, neither am I”. Jake soon finds out that he and Chris both have very individual regrets about Roger, and both are wondering if they could have did more.

After being invited to come to church the next morning, Jake goes and is amazed at what he sees and hears – this was not his picture of church. He then gets invited to the church Souled Out Youth Group, and meets new friends (people he would never hangout with at school) and enjoys seeing four guys up front who have been challenged by Chris to ‘chug’ a can of Coke…through a sock…and the sock is from the feet of the guy next to them…I am sure this will be played out at Youth Groups across the country!

Jake is offered to keep attending and to get to know God. Jake struggles with knowing half the kids in the Souled Out Youth group are “fake Christians”. Jake decides he will keep “checking out” this God stuff, and it will be his decision on if it is worth it or not.

This movie tackles many of the issues facing our teenagers today. Peer pressure, popularity, suicide, “cutting” and the misconception that fame is what it is all about. I am sure there will be some who state they cannot believe a movie made by Christians contains underage drinking, sex (there are no scenes of sex but it is obvious what takes place), suicide, and girls wearing low cut shirts and so on. I give the creators of the movie and book credit for producing a story that is a very accurate picture of the lives our teenagers are living today. This movie portrays a very accurate picture of life as a High School teenager.

Jake’s world is falling apart around him, and he has a choice to make. Roger’s death, family problems, a situation with Amy and the “in” crowd deserting him leaves Jake knowing he cannot do this on his own and he needs God’s help.

I urge you to see this movie and take as many teenagers as you can with you – both those who know God and especially those who do not. This movie is not about teaching the viewers the Bible, the story of Christ, or painting a picture that once someone comes to a relationship with God all our problems go away. This movie is about real life challenges and coming to a relationship with God.

In summary, I rate this movie 5 stars out of 5 stars and believe this movie will be very popular with Christians and non-Christians alike. This movie also made me appreciate the Youth Pastor at our church even more, and I am thankful for everything that he and the team he leads accomplishes on a regular basis.

Noah: More Than An Ark Builder

Everyone remembers Noah for building the ark, and we all love to tell our kids the story of Noah. Did you know that Noah was five hundred years old when God instructed him to build the ark? It took Noah over one hundred years to build the ark (no power tools for Noah!). But there is another very important fact we need to make sure we are telling when explaining the story of Noah. What did he do the first five hundred years of his life? Some might think "we do not know" but the Bible does tell us.

In Genesis 6:9 we are told Noah was a righteous man, blameless amoung the people of his time, and he walked with God. That is what Noah was doing his first 500 years - we need to make sure we remember to tell that part of history when speaking about the great flood and the building of the ark!

To Save A Life Movie

The nationwide release date for the To Save A Life movie is January 22nd (only 10 days away!). This week I will have the opportunity to review the movie at a special advance screening. Look for my thoughts on Friday. The trailer for the movie can be viewed at the bottom my blog.

I am really hoping the movie is as good or better then the book, as the book of the same title was very, very good. This movie has received very favorable response from people who have seen the movie at other advanced screenings.

One Minute After You Die

"One minute AFTER YOU DIE you will either be elated or terrified...
and IT WILL BE TO LATE to reroute your travel plans."

That is on the back cover of Erwin Lutzer's book One Minute After You Die. Talk about an attention grabber!

Looking To Jesus

It is always the Holy Spirit's work to turn our eyes away from self to Jesus. But Satan's work is just the opposite; he is constantly trying to make us look at ourselves instead of Christ. He insinuates, "Your sins are too great for pardon; you have no faith; you do not repent enough; you will never be able to continue to the end; you do not have the joy of His children; you have such a wavering hold on Jesus." All these thoughts about self, and we will never find comfort or assurance by looking within. But the Holy Spirit turns our eyes entirely away from self: He tells that we are nothing, but Christ is everything. Remember therefore, it is not your hold of Christ that saves you - it is Christ; it is not your joy in Christ that saves you - it is Christ; it is not even faith in Christ, although that is the instrument - it is Christ's blood and merit. Therefore do not look so much to your hand with which you are grasping Christ as to Christ; do not look to your hope but to Jesus, the source of your hope; do not look to your faith, but to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of your faith. We will never find happiness by looking at our prayers, our deeds, or our feelings; it is what Jesus is, not what we are that gives rest to the soul. If we are to overcome Satan and have peace with God, it must be by "looking to Jesus". Keep your eye simply on Him; let His death, His sufferings, His merits, His glories, His intercession be fresh upon your mind. When you awaken in the morning look to Him; when you lie down at night look to Him. Do not let your hopes and fears come between you and Jesus; follow hard after Him, and He will never fail you.

How Could Something So Good Fall Apart?

Ever have your dreams come true and everything is great and you knew God was at work and then have everything just crumble? Ever wonder how could God just stand back and watch something that was so good just fall apart?

Phil Vischer - co-creator of the VeggieTales spoke at the 2009 Founders Week Conference. I encourage you to click on the link below and listen to Phil speak regarding the reason sometimes our dreams are shattered or our circumstances change. By clicking on the link you can listen on your computer to Dreams Parts 1 & 2 or you can download for free via Itunes by searching for the podcast Today in the Word.

As Phil explains, he is a storyteller (and a very good one!). He came up with the idea of limbless vegetables telling Bible stories (and as he put it "try selling that concept!) and the rest is history. Did you know VeggieTales is the best sales of direct videos, regardless secular or Christian? VeggieTales sales surpassed the likes of Barney, and Scooby-Do.

During the success of VeggieTales the company grew from 3 employees to over 200. Many people, including Phil, thought Big Ideas (Phil's production company) could become the next Disney. What a story: small town kid's idea becomes huge success!

But then everything started going wrong. Sales stopped growing. Over half of the companies employees had to be laid off. At that time, the release of VeggieTales: Jonah - a feature length movie was being released. Phil thought "if the movie can just do double of what we think it will we will not have to lay people off...God can do that...' But God did not do that. Phil then thought "When Jonah is released on DVD if we can just double the projected sales we will not have to lay anyone off...God can do that...' But God did not. Then Big Ideas was sued, and Phil prayed for God to make the jury understand Big Ideas did nothing wrong...God could do that...but God did not do that.

So what does it mean when a dream comes to life, God shows up, and then the dream dies? Click the link below and select Dreams to find out...

Over Heard This: Youth Group: "It's Not A Spectator Sport"

While driving in my car and listening to the radio, I heard a Youth Pastor speaking about a Youth Group and that the theme of the Youth Group was:

"It's Not A Spectator Sport".

What a great theme for teens! Are you in a Youth Group? I want to encourage you to be part of the action, contribute and help others grow while you are growing. Not in a Youth Group at your church? Take the time to attend your Youth Group event, check it out and see if it is for you. You will meet new people, make great friendships, have more fun then you can imagine and most importantly, learn the Bible and how the Bible relates to you - today.

Thought Question

My family and I were watching the "Crazy Love" DVD Study Resource last night and Francis Chan asked this question:

If you were alone on an island and had only the Bible to read, after reading the Bible over and over again would you come away saying that "church" of today is what the Bible indicates? Or would you come away that we we have been fed "church" and think "it has always been this way" so it must be right?

Read the Bible and see if your church has added to or deleted things that the Bible teaches us. There are many gifted speakers and teachers we are blessed to have the ability to learn the Bible from. But do your homework - read the Bible and determine for yourself if what you are hearing is correct.

3:16 The Numbers of Hope

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life."
John 3:16

A twenty-six-word parade of hope: beginning with God, ending with life, and urging us to do the same. Brief enough to write on a napkin or memorize in a moment, yet solid enough to weather two thousand years of storms and questions.

The verse is an alphabet of grace, a table of contents to the Christian hope, each word a safe-deposit box of jewels. Read it again, slowly and aloud, and note the word that snatches your attention. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

God so loved this world? Heartbreakers, hope-snatchers, and dream-dousers prowl this orb. Dictators rage. Abusers inflict. Reverends think they deserve the title. But God loves. And he loves the world so much he gave his:

Declarations?
Rules?
Dicta?
Edicts?

No. The heart-stilling, mind-bending, deal-making-or-breaking claim of John 3:16 is this: God gave his son . . . his only son. Not abstract ideas but a flesh-wrapped divinity. Why? so that “whoever believes in him shall not perish.”

The above is from the book 3:16 The Numbers of Hope by Max Lucado.

John 3:16 is one of the most widely known verse in the Bible - and it is hope for everyone. It is one of my favorite verses also. "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life. Whoever..that is you and me...the person walking down the street, your co-worker, best friend...everyone. Have you shared this incredible gift from God?

Still, My Soul Be Still

One of my favorite songs from the latest Keith and Kristyn Getty CD is Still, My Soul Be Still

Words and Music by Keith & Kristyn Getty & Stuart Townend

Still my soul be still
And do not fear
Though winds of change may rage tomorrow
God is at your side
No longer dread
The fires of unexpected sorrow

God You are my God
And I will trust in You and not be shaken
Lord of peace renew
A steadfast spirit within me
To rest in You alone

Still my soul be still
Do not be moved
By lesser lights and fleeting shadows
Hold onto His ways
With shield of faith
Against temptations flaming arrows

Still my soul be still
Do not forsake
The Truth you learned in the beginning
Wait upon the Lord
And hope will rise As stars appear when day is dimming

Truth For All Time

One of the books I am currently reading is Truth For All Time by John Calvin. In the winter of 1536-1537, the 29 year old Calvin wrote, in French, his Brief Outline of the Christian Faith.

I would like to touch on the following section that Calvin wrote "We Lay Hold of Christ by Faith":

The merciful Father offers us his Son through the Word of the gospel. And it is by faith that we embrace him as given to us.

It is true the Word of the gospel calls all men to participate in Christ, but many, blinded and hardened by unbelief, spurn such extraordinary grace. Only believers, then, enjoy Christ; only they receive him as as sent to them. He is given to them, and they do not reject him. They are called by him, and they follow him.

Are you doing your part to spread the gospel? Have you reached out to non-believers? Why do you think non-believers do not know Christ? I know some people who just have "never really thought about it" and other people who think since science cannot prove there is a God there must not be one. Be a witness today to someone, tell them the Good News and help them learn the Bible. Many people who are non-believers have never taken the time to read the Bible or attend a good Bible teaching church, and are making a very un-educated choice.

New Hampshire 5th State To Allow Same Sex Marriage

New Hampshire became the fifth state to allow same-sex couples to marry, joining Connecticut, Vermont, Massachusetts and Iowa.

My thoughts on this? The government did not create marriage and they should not change marriage. The Bible is very clear, God created man and woman and joined them together.

Looking Back Before We Look Ahead

Well 2010 is here and another decade has pasted by. Remember at the beginning of the last decade the big craze was "Y2K" and if all the computers were going to crash? Here is some interesting things that happened in the last decade:

The Ipod was introduced in 2001 and now Itunes is the largest seller of music in the world.

The Harry Potter movies were released and the 5 movies brought in revenues of $5.5 billion dollars.

Youtube, Myspace, Twitter and Facebook changed how people "communicate".

Podcasts and blogging came into existence.

3D movies, DVR/Tivo and being able to buy full TV seasons of your favorite show.

The realization that just because we live in the wealthiest nation in the world, we are still open to terrorist attacks and 9/11 will always be remembered.

Have you thought about what this new decade may bring? What are you going to do in 2010? Take some time to not make a New Year's Resolution, but really think about somethings you want to change or improve in your life. Read your Bible more? Maybe finding a relationship with God? Become a bigger part of your church body? Whatever you want to work on you will have your ups and downs - just hang in there and keep going back to working on what you picked and you will do it!

Truth and Reality Compete For Teen Hearts

TV today has pushed the line more and more on what is being shown. Not only has cable and dish service channels pushed the limit but so has the major broadcast networks. Case in point, on the ABC show "Cougar Town", an episode was aired where it is was portrayed that the main character of the show (the mother) was preforming oral sex on someone she met at a bar and her son walks in and views what she is doing. "Gossip Girl" promotes sex (recently advertising a threesome), drugs and alcohol and even the older show "Friends" promotes sex before marriage and gives the viewpoint that it is OK for someone to have multiple sex partners and one night stands out of marriage and while married. Have you noticed the number of shows that now have a homosexual character?

The music industry has followed along also, with the ability of someone to sing no longer the main criteria for success, but rather what someone looks like, the (little) amount of clothes they wear on stage and in their videos, and that they sing about sex, death, drugs, suicide and living in the "real" world.

So do we have the attitude that "this is just reality today?" Click on the title bar for a good article by Bob Smithouser of Focus on the Family's Pluggedin Online regarding this topic.
